Sternula albifrons sinensis (Eastern Little Tern) is regular migrant that inhabits the big shallow inlets of northern New Zealand. It is also a casual visitor to other estuarine habitats south to Stewart Island / Rakiura. It breeds in SE Russia to Japan, SE Asia, Philippines, New Guinea and Australia.
The Eastern Little Tern has a body length of 25 cm (bill tip to tail) and is similar in size to NZs fairy Tern (Sternula nereis davisa). It has a black eye-stripe that extends to the base of the yellow bill. It feeds by shallow diving for live fish.
