New Zealand has comprehensive spatial datasets, which means data is linked to specific places. Several of the following NZ government sets can be accessed by setting up one account run by Koordinates, which provides you with an access key to all data. Select the datasets you wish to see, and the area of interest then download the GIS layers in various formats and projections.

Data.govt.nz[edit | edit source]

Data.govt.nzhas background information on open data, policies, licencing and an index of all government data available for access. You can search for the data you need by "Groups", such as 'Local and Regional', or 'Environment'; or by specific organisations.

Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences[edit | edit source]

'GNS Science Te Pu Ao' provides geological information as Web Feature Services (WFS) and Web Mapping Services (WMS). You can see a preview of these on the Geoserver.

Koordinates[edit | edit source]

This group runs the NationalMap Data Service with a wide range of data, including emergency management datasets. Sign up for free access to base layers for New Zealand (accurate rives and in various shades), or to access commercial data.

LINZ (Land Information New Zealand)[edit | edit source]

LINZ Free online access to New Zealand’s most up-to-date land and seabed data. Topo maps and aerial imagery for all of NZ or regions, with property boundaries, statutory authority boundaries, protected areas (Crown property), roads, marine charts, and much more. Sentinel-2 satellite imagery (10m2) is also available for remote sensing analysis.

Landcare Research Manaaaki Whenua[edit | edit source]

Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research runs the Land Resource Information Systems portal (LRIS Science portal) where you will find the Land Cover database (LCDB), and data on soil classification, erosion, elevation, climatology, meteorology and the potential vegetation of NZ.

Ministry for the Environment[edit | edit source]

MfE data service gives you free online access to the environmental datasets. This page has information about the service including who to attribute and how the data can be used.

National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA)[edit | edit source]

Various NIWA decision support tools are available as QGIS plugins:

  • Structured Conservation Planning used to enable the collaborative development of Marine Protected Areas (MPA's)
  • Survey planning plugin allows users to calculate random points or coastal transects for a stratified random survey
  • Biodata plugin tool allows QGIS users to connect to a IPT (Internet Publishing Toolkit) server and download Darwin Core archives to use in QGIS. IPT is developed and provided by GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) as a mechanism for transferring biodata sets between databases. The plugin opens up the ready built global system of biological species observations to QGIS users.
  • The River Environment Classification (REC) visually answers the questions, in terms of the freshwater reaches of the REC2:
    • Where could something here have come from?
    • Where could something here get to?
  • Web Data Plugin (under development) plugin enhances the ability of QGIS to connect to and manage data from OGC WFS/WMS services. It is able to harvest a CSW (Catalog Service for the Web) list of WFS & WMS services, from which a user can select and store favourites.

Statistics NZ[edit | edit source]

Statistics NZ has a Geographic Data Service for electoral boundaries, meshblocks and census data.
