The small male weta photographed below is a bush species, not a troglophile (cave dweller). This species seeks out dark, humid habitats, in the bush under stones, dead leaves or loose bark and it may dig holes in the ground. 

Photographed in a bushy urban area New Plymouth under a plywood sheet lying against a wall.  Body length 16 mm (without legs and antenna)
