Department of Conservation[edit | edit source]

Nature Space is a website for groups, individuals and landowners undertaking ecological restoration in New Zealand. Visit the 'Resource Centre' to see advice about restoration plans, monitoring, pest control, advocacy, planting and much more. There is a page of both online and field courses run by the Department and other providers.

  • Bird records worldwide The Cornell Lab of Ornithology: Explore birds and hotspots near you and wherever you go, all based on the latest sightings from around the world. Data collected goes through to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)

i-Naturalist[edit | edit source]

  • Record your wildlife sightings here on iNaturalist NZ, where you can record what you see in nature, meet other nature watchers, and learn about the natural world. Data collected goes through to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

Ministry for Primary Industries[edit | edit source]

  • National Aquatic Biodiversity Information System (NABIS) developed in conjunction with NIWA. This data is available through both a web map service (WMS) or web feature service (WFS). It includes distribution maps of fish, birds, mammals, invertebrates and plants (seaweeds).
  • Other MPI data is published on Search and select the format you require, like a GIS shape file, e.g. search for 'fish' : trawl fishing effort, sediment, conservation status of native freshwater fish.
